Yarrawonga (Victoria) Mulwala (NSW)

The Inland Aquatic Paradise

Yarrawonga and Mulwala are located at the western corner of Lake Mulwala where the lake passes through the Yarrawonga Weir and flows into the Murray River. These 2 bodies of water form part of the state boundary with New South Wales and Victoria. Yarrawonga in Victoria is clustered along the south-western shore of the lake opposite Mulwala in New South Wales.

It is 264 km north-east of Melbourne via the Hume Freeway (turn off at Benalla or come inland via Numurkah) and is 128 metres above sea-level.

Renowned for its wonderful climate, this picturesque piece of regional Victoria and New South Wales is an “Inland Aquatic Paradise” for visitors to take some time to enjoy stunning scenery. Lose yourself in the serene surrounds of the forest, Lake Mulwala and of course, the mighty Murray River. Yarrawonga and Mulwala are a popular holiday resort and retirement towns. The local irrigation scheme supports substantial primary industries, such as dairying, agriculture and pastoral activities, in the surrounding area.

If you love life by the water you’ll love Yarrawonga-Mulwala! Do you want more? You can always enjoy Australia’s largest public 45 hole golf course. You’ll discover a world of adventure in the region including cruises, markets, kayaking, scenic flights and winery tours, take a trip to sample the local wines, breweries and check out the museums, amusement park, and so much more.

Relax for a few days just to soak up our sunshine, maybe do a little shopping, and enjoy some great food at our cafes, restaurants, clubs and hotels. Yarrawonga-Mulwala is truly a unique “oasis”.

Yarrawonga is also the start of the large 404km, 5 day Murray River Paddle, a canoe/kayak race from Yarrawonga to Swan Hill which began in 1969.

Did you know?

Yarrawonga and Mulwala are linked by a bridge over the lake and nearly create a continuous settlement. This bridge contains an unusual bend and dip in the middle, a result of miscommunication between the 2 state governments during its construction in 1923.

West of Yarrawonga Mulwala are many access points to the river. Dirt tracks lead from the Murray Valley Highway through state forests to picnic areas with fire places and tables and to over 50 camping beaches.
