Renmark, Paringa & Customs House (South Australia)

SA’s River Paradise

Welcome to SA’s River Paradise! As a gateway to the Murray River in South Australia, Renmark is often the first stop for visitors to South Australia from Victoria and New South Wales. Positioned on a sweeping bend on the magnificent Murray River, the towns of Renmark, Paringa and Lyrup form a significant element of our vibrant Riverland community. Featuring lush roses, manicured parks and gardens, stunning nature walks, wetlands and lookouts, river cruises, canoe adventures and a great selection of events, ensures Renmark and Paringa provide the ideal location for holiday makers and experience seekers alike.

Renmark takes its name from the Aboriginal word meaning ‘red mud’. Founded in 1887, Renmark is part of Australia’s oldest irrigation settlement with Mildura, following a joint agreement between the State Government and the Canadian engineers, George and Ben Chaffey. The brothers were instrumental in helping to establish the system of irrigation still in use on the Murray today.

Stay a while and enjoy our superb dining venues, great selection of accommodation options and sample our local wines, brews and produce. Hire a houseboat and take the time to meander our dynamic river scenery. There are surprises around every corner. Our fabulous river parks offer camping along the creeks and river and provide perfect access for fishing.

Renmark is home to Calperum Station, which resides as part of the Riverland Biosphere Reserve, previously known as the ‘Bookmark Biosphere’. Comprising 242,800 hectares of open mallee bushland and Murray River floodplain including one of the largest remaining continuous stands of ancient Mallee left in the world and the presence of several threatened bird species. It is an internationally recognised world leader among biosphere reserves for its efforts in ecologically sustainable development and community involvement and capacity building.

The Renmark Paringa district is home to a variety of industries from horticulture, viticulture and agriculture and also has a thriving retail and tourism sector.

The recreational experiences in and around Renmark are endless. There are galleries made for browsing, fruit stalls and outlets to stock up on the district’s famous products, beckoning wineries, fantastic picnic spots, billabongs and secluded creeks to explore. During the evening, the riverfront turns into ‘Possum Parade’ as cheeky possums come down to feed.

Renmark and Paringa are proud to boast some of the best natural beauty along the Murray River including year round sunshine; this coupled with an abundance of activities and attractions is sure to provide visitors with an experience to be remembered.

The small township of Paringa is only 4km from Renmark across the historic Paringa Bridge and offers a country pub, motel, caravan park and cottage style accommodation and a fantastic antique and collectables store. You’ll also discover on the Murray River Bert Dix Memorial Park, Lock 5 BBQ picnic area and houseboat marina.

North of Paringa is wonderful Headings Cliff lookout, the Wilkadene Woolshed Brewery offering boutique ales from the deck of their historic woolshed overlooking the Murray. Down from the lookout on the dirt road you’ll find Murtho Forest Reserve. Further north again is the Old Customs House and Border Cliffs Wetland Walking Trail.

Paringa is also home to a small colony of koalas located within the Paringa Paddock Nature Walk. You may be lucky enough to find one sleeping in the tree tops. Don’t forget to discover the Black Stump in the main street; it is the largest of 11 known in Australia or wander through the rustic and rural displays at the community museum.
